How often have you been asked, "How are you?"

and to which you've replied "Good thanks, how are you?"
Probably too often to count, right?

I have been asked this generic question to the extent that I hated it when someone would ask me how I was doing.  I had realized that the question "how are you", which I'm sure was created with the best intentions at heart, was now simply thrown around, like a forgotten idea scrumpled up on a paper and chucked into the nearest bin. It had lost its meaning. No one ever replied to this common question with an uncommon answer. Someone could be depressed or having a less-than-pleasant day, yet still their reply would be "I'm good thanks, how are you?" So, eventually I came up with my own version of the same question.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the happiest, how happy are you?

In most cases this question is met with some trepidation, a weird look and then a number. To this day, I have received answers ranging from negative 100 to positive 11, and everything in between. But, it's a much better system than the generic "how are you" question- that I promise. The look on people's faces when I first ask them this question makes it more worth it too; try it and you'll see what I mean.

In conclusion, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the happiest, how happy are you?
